Chemical properties Brown viscous liquid, with a slight odor of sulfur compounds. Freezing point -40°C, relative density 1.23 (20°C). PH is 1-2. soluble in water. It is a balanced mixture of 65% monomer, 20% dimer, and 3% trimer. The polymer can be depolymerized and absorbed in the small intestine of chickens and pigs.
Uses This product is a feed nutrition fortifier, its role and biological potency in the presence of L-methionine is the same as DL-methionine. Lack of methionine in livestock and poultry can cause developmental difficulties, weight loss, weakened liver and kidney function, muscle atrophy, and degeneration of fur.
The production method consists of the reaction of propylene aldehyde and methyl mercaptan under the action of a catalyst to give methyl thio propionaldehyde, followed by the catalytic synthesis of 2-hydroxy-4-methylthio butyronitrile with hydrogen cyanide, and finally hydrolysis in the presence of excess sulfuric acid. 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid.
